Objective of Gruha Jyothi Karnataka Electricity Scheme
The main aim of the Gruha Jyothi Scheme is to provide relief from high electricity charges by giving free power to households. The scheme also encourages people to use electricity more wisely and avoid unnecessary wastage.
By merging older schemes such as Kuteera Jyothi, Amrutha Jyothi, and Bhagya Jyothi into one, the state government has tried to simplify the process and make it more beneficial to the public. The scheme also aims to reduce the burden on small households and promote a cleaner energy usage habit.
Eligibility Criteria for Karnataka Gruha Jyothi Electricity Scheme
To apply for this electricity scheme, the applicant must be a resident of Karnataka. The person must also have a domestic electricity connection in their name or in the name of the house owner. Only one connection per household is allowed under the scheme.
Tenants living in rented houses are also eligible, even if the meter is not in their name. However, they must provide a rental agreement to prove their occupancy. In case of new connections, the government provides a basic average consumption value to start with.
People living outside Karnataka, those having commercial electricity connections, and people using electricity above 200 units on average are not eligible for this scheme. Ineligible applicants will have to continue paying their regular electricity bills.

How the 200 Units Free Electricity is Calculated under the Scheme
The government calculates your eligibility based on your average monthly consumption over the past year. They check how many units you used in last 10 months and calculate the average. Then, 10 percent extra units are added to this average.
If this total is below or equal to 200 units, you will be eligible for free electricity up to that number each month. If you use electricity less than or equal to your eligible average, you get a zero bill. If you go slightly above your average, you pay only for the excess units. But if your usage crosses 200 units in any month, you will have to pay for the full bill for that month.
In case of new connections or if there is no usage history, the state has fixed a basic average of 53 units plus 10 percent, which equals around 58-59 units. You will get that many units free every month until your first-year average is established.
